Medigap Plans - Knowing What is Available

Retirement age brings on a whole new batch of situations that you may not have ever experienced before. Living on a fixed income can be a challenge, to put it lightly. Any unanticipated medical expenses, like a sudden trip to the hospital or doctor, could result in financial chaos.

What you need to do is prevent this from happening to you by obtaining the right Medigap coverage. Medicare is often not enough and Medigap supplemental insurance plans act to fill the “gaps” left by Medicare.

Medigap plans are also known as Medicare Supplement plans. Private insurers offer some or all of the 12 federally-standardized medicare Supplemental plans.

They may also offer local plans that are not standard on a federal level, but no single insurance provider is allowed by law to offer more than 14 plans altogether.

In June 2010, there will only be ten federally-standardized Medigap Plans because two plans will be added while four existing ones will be removed from the system. Educating yourself about the relevant plans for you in your area is important now before the changes are made.

Perhaps you are currently covered by Plans E, H, I or J, the plans that will be eliminated come June 2010. You will be obligated to switch to a different plan in this case. You might choose to opt for one of the new ones, either Plan M or Plan N. These changes are being made to help the consumer get better coverage at a better price.

The switch and looking into different levels of coverage may be frustrating now, but you will save money in the future with these changes. No matter which of the medicare supplemental insurance plans you choose, you must have the premiums for Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B paid each month. Costs vary by plan, supplemental insurance provider and your geographic location.

Every person who is eligible to receive Medicare coverage is also guaranteed the right to a Medigap insurance policy if the right circumstances exist. Married couples must purchase separate coverage in every instance. While you may be interested in purchasing a plan that is not government standardized, you will save yourself time and effort if you only consider these.
